 What is the SIAB?

The Section Internationale Anglophone de Buc (SIAB) is a curriculum developed by the French Education Nationale to make it possible for English-speaking pupils to integrate into France and the French school system, while maintaining their Anglophone capacity for a possible return to their country of origin. Today it concerns families from Anglophone countries, expatriated in France, French families returning from expatriation in Anglophone countries as well as bi-national and bilingual families living in the area. This program is thus intended for pupils that are already bilingual. There is an entrance test to assess their English skills.

The curriculum of 6 hours at collège level and 8 hours at lycée level is based on a program from Cambridge equivalent to “A Levels” in England. The remainder of the hours follows the French national program: bilingualism, biculturalism, and bi-pedagogy are the strong points of its teaching.

The collège section: at the collège Martin Luther King (MLK) in Buc, fifteen to twenty English speaking pupils at each level from 6ième to 3ième are completely integrated into a class of 28 pupils. The cohabitation of French-speaking and English-speaking children is a source of mutual enrichment. After the 3ième, the pupils take the International Option of the Brevet des Collèges.  This includes an exam in English on the History and Geography program as well as English Literature.

The lycée section: made up of exclusively Anglophone classes for the 10th 11th and 12th grades is integrated into the lycée Franco-Allemand (LFA) in Buc, located next to the collège MLK.  The pupils prepare the series S (scientific) and ES (economics and social studies) for the French Baccalaureate, as well as the British international option. The examinations of the Anglophone subjects (Literature, Geography and History), are prepared by the Uinversity of Cambridge, and the inspectors are trained by the University of Cambridge.  These exams include both a written and an oral section.

The SIAB created in 1998, obtained its official recognition by the Ministry for the Education Nationale. This decree was signed by the minister G. de Robien on November 7, 2006 and was published in the Journal Officiel de la République Française (JO n° 266 of November 17, 2006).    The high school section was opened officially under the direction of the Recteur de Versailles in September 2005.
This section, which is currently expanding, aims to have at least two complete classes in each year, to permit the addition of the option L (literary) for the baccalaureate.
